Abstract
Since the current regime came to power in 2013, Egypt’s urban landscapes have undergone dramatic change. In this talk, I will review some of the main directions of this transformation as it pertains to Cairo. In particular, I will focus on public space and how its meaning has shifted as part of a broader reconceptualization of citizenship.
Pascale Ghazaleh is a historian working on property and citizenship in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Egypt. She teaches at the American University in Cairo.
