Summary<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Z\u0101r\u00a0<\/em>of\u00a0<\/em>Ab\u016b al-Ghai\u1e6d is a very unique model of cultural, religious and music syncretism. Developed between the XIX and XX centuries in the Delta of Egypt from the Sudanese and Upper Egyptian\u00a0z\u0101r\u00a0<\/em>cult, it is carried on by the sufi\u00a0\u1e6c<\/em>ar\u012bqa A<\/em>\u1e25<\/em>madiya \u0120i<\/em>\u1e6d<\/em>\u0101niya<\/em>. This\u00a0\u1e6c<\/em>ar\u012bqa\u00a0<\/em>is founded by the dervish Sidi\u00a0\u1e24assan Ab\u016b\u00a0al-\u0120ai\u1e6d\u00a0who combined the\u00a0zikr<\/em>\u00a0with the\u00a0z\u0101r\u00a0<\/em>practices in the Ab\u016b al-Ghai\u1e6d village and Qalyubiya Governorate. The descendants of the sufi saint are still keeping the\u00a0z\u0101r\u00a0<\/em>tradition alive, holding the legacy of their ancestor.\u00a0From the\u00a0\u1e24assan Ab\u016b al-\u0120ai\u1e6d\u2019 biographical anecdotes that are only orally transmitted, it emerges a peculiar sense of\u00a0pietas <\/em>towards the women condition. He used to give protection to women with no\u00a0w\u0101l\u012b<\/em>, and give them hospitality in his maw\u0101lid<\/em> pilgrimages and, by accepting them in his zikr, he shifted slowly the healing practice from the zikr to the\u00a0z\u0101r.\u00a0We don\u2019t have many informations about\u00a0\u1e24assan Ab\u016b\u00a0al-\u0120ai\u1e6d, however the texts and\u00a0the horal stories,\u00a0we can collocate his character in a specific historical context in which many sufi personalities and unofficial\u00a0\u1e6d<\/em>uruq<\/em>\u00a0\u1e63<\/em>\u016bfi\u012byya<\/em> were persecuted for having supported and shared the \u2018Ur\u0101b\u012b insurrection against the khedive Tawf\u012bq in 1879.<\/p>\n

During the\u00a0z\u0101r<\/em>\u00a0ritual, a small ensemble is set around the practitioner who,\u00a0sourranded by sound, dances following the beat, considered the breath of the possessing spirit. Dancing on a progressively speed-increasing beat, the possessed person can enter in connection with the spirit, appease his\/her anger and end the conflict that caused the illness which the practitioner was complaining of.\u00a0A climax reaches its maximum level through the trance, or state of\u00a0semiconsciousness, that allows the devotees to feel relieved and healed. \u00a0In the \u1e25<\/em>adrat al-z<\/em>\u0101r, <\/em>devotees find a safe social and phisical space where it is possible\u00a0to express themselves freely inside specific ritual codifications,\u00a0often in opposition to\u00a0common cultural rules. Intra-gender dynamics and embodiment of the desired social aspirations – represented commonly by the asy<\/em>\u0101d <\/em>(spirits)– <\/em>are just some of the very complex components of the Egyptian\u00a0z\u0101r. <\/em><\/p>\n

She obtained a PhD in Cultural Heritage and Territory from \u201cTor Vergata\u201d University of Rome with a research project in Ethnomusicology discipline titled: \u201cMusic, identities and politics in post-2011 Egypt: electoral propaganda, mass media and local dynamics\u201d (2020), and she holds a Master Degree\u00a0in Oriental Studies from Sapienza University of Rome (2015).<\/p>\n
