The third session of the seminar ASWAT organized by the CEDEJ, the IFAO and the IFE will be presented by Manal Ibrahim (Tahtib Festival of Luxor, Egyptian Ministry of Culture) who will introduce the Ta\u1e25\u1e6d\u012bb tradition in upper Egypt along with introducing the musicians and members of the group who will perform the music repertoire of their heritage.<\/div>\n

In Upper Egypt, many maw\u0101lid (pl. m\u016blid) are held during the month of \u0161a\u02bfb\u0101n, the month preceding rama\u1e0d\u0101n.<\/div>\n
Each of these festivals represents a special occasion for the men of \u1e62a\u02bf\u012bd \u2013 Upper Egypt \u2013 to gather and play ta\u1e25\u1e6d\u012bb, the stick game, also known as la\u02bfb al-\u02bfa\u1e63\u0101ya, an exclusively male sport where the practitioner has to demonstrate moral values and strength.<\/div>\n
Ta\u1e25\u1e6d\u012bb duels, can last for several hours, even all night, and can\u2019t take place without the mizm\u0101r (oboe with double reed of conical bore) and the \u1e6dabla balad\u012b (large drum with two membranes). Steps are built in interaction with this music, and vice versa, in a call-and-response pattern. The dancer draws the circle while walking, stick raised, while the zumm\u0101ra (sg. mizm\u0101r) pursue their \u1e0d\u014dr, the dancer turns spinning the stick and the game is open\u2026<\/div>\n
