Most commentators of the Indian democracy equate \u2018participation\u2019 with voter turnout. However, new practices have emerged and developed in India since the 1990s, fostering direct interaction between citizens and public authorities at the local level. How is participatory democracy embodied in a profoundly unequal Indian society? How is participation organized? Which devices are used? Is the development of participatory practices in India mostly informed by endogenous or exogenous dynamics? What can we learn from the Indian version of participatory democracy in relation to the wider concept of participation in a democratic context? Drawing from the research findings she notably develops in her book Forms and ambiguities of participatory democracy in India (\u00c9ditions du Croquant, 2018), St\u00e9phanie Tawa Lama-Rewal will provide us with answers to some of the afore-mentioned interrogations on the specificities of citizen participation in India.

St\u00e9phanie Tawa Lama-Rewal, CNRS Research Fellow and Research Director of Political Science at Center for South Asian Studies (CEIAS), School of Advanced Studies for the Social Sciences (EHESS)<\/p>\n

St\u00e9phanie Tawa Lama-Rewal studies contemporary Indian democracy through four main themes: group (and especially women) representation, the participatory dimension of democracy, local democracy, and urban governance.<\/p>\n

She has notably co-edited Emotions, Mobilisations and South Asian Politics (Routledge, 2019) with Am\u00e9lie Blom and published Les avatars de la participation en Inde. Formes et ambigu\u00eft\u00e9s de la d\u00e9mocratie participative (\u00c9ditions du Croquant, 2018).<\/p>\n
