Tourism has grown into a global industry, often seen as an economic solution for regional development and employment. But the spread of mass tourism to fragile environments raises many issues around land and water preservation, landscape management and respect of local and indigenous populations. There have been many attempts since the late 20th century to promote alternative forms of tourism that respect local diversity while offering sustainable incomes and environments. How can a country like Egypt avoid the exploitation of sensitive resources for the benefit of international capital? Is it possible to find an equilibrium between social, economic and environmental pressures? And can tourism be reconciled with equality and local empowerment? These and other questions will be addressed in our panel of speakers, leaders of sustainable projects, tourism experts and academics.<\/p>\n
