Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies<\/strong> and Center for Islamic Studies<\/strong> at Sophia University invite Sylvia Chiffoleau (CNRS France), and hold a research seminar on the modern history of pilgrimage to Mecca.
\nSylvia Chiffoleau is an historian affiliated to the Laboratoire de Recherche historique Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes (LARHRA) in Lyon (France). Her field of study is the history of modern Arab societies (19th-20th centuries), focusing on health issues, pilgrimage mobility and the evolution of time conceptions. She has published in 2015 a book about the pilgrimage to Mecca during the colonial period: Le Voyage \u00e0 La Mecque. Un p\u00e8lerinage mondial en terre d\u2019islam (Paris, Belin).
\nIn this seminar, she will talk about the transformations of the pilgrimage to Mecca in the XIX century and the beginning of XX century with the development of transport, and its impact on health, epidemic risk, and the health control systems.<\/p>\n
