La construction d\u2019une nouvelle sph\u00e8re publique au XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle met au d\u00e9fi la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019un nouvel \u201cespace public\u201d permettant \u00e0 des citoyens de diverses provenances ou appartenances de coop\u00e9rer, coexister et participer. Partant de ce constat, ce s\u00e9minaire vise \u00e0 renforcer et d\u00e9velopper la recherche sur les espaces publics et l\u2019espace public (au singulier) \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e8re globale. Aussi le SIAS (Center for Islamic Studies at Sophia University) \u00e0 Tokyo et le CEDEJ (Centre d\u2019\u00e9tudes et de documentation \u00e9conomiques, juridiques et sociales francais au Caire ont le plaisir d\u2019annoncer un appel \u00e0 communications pour ce s\u00e9minaire international. \u00c0 cette occasion seront rassembl\u00e9s les chercheur.e.s et doctorant.e.s int\u00e9ress\u00e9.e.s par la confrontation de leurs travaux et le d\u00e9bat d\u2019id\u00e9es sur ces sujets d\u2019actualit\u00e9 pour la r\u00e9gion.
\nEspace public, espaces publics, esprit public : autant de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences aux lieux permettant une collaboration, des formes de communication et d\u2019\u00e9change voire d\u2019interaction. L\u2019emploi de trois notions diff\u00e9rentes permet de couvrir diff\u00e9rents aspects li\u00e9s au caract\u00e8re \u201cpublic\u201d: l\u2019espace public se r\u00e9f\u00e8re au tournant communicationnel et au d\u00e9bat d\u2019id\u00e9es tandis que les espaces publics et les espaces du commun rel\u00e8vent davantage de la dimension mat\u00e9rielle qui constitue notamment une base pour que se d\u00e9veloppe un espace public m\u00e9taphorique. Cela peut inclure des espaces interm\u00e9diaires tels que des caf\u00e9s, salons et des espaces suppos\u00e9ment publics mais souvent occup\u00e9s par l\u2019automobile. Cela recouvre \u00e9galement des \u00e9v\u00e8nements religieux et socio-politiques (mouleds, etc.) et leur position dans l\u2019espace urbain. Par sph\u00e8re publique ou esprit public, nous renvoyons \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents enjeux publics d\u00e9battus ou au c\u0153ur des pr\u00e9occupations des individus (revenus et acc\u00e8s aux biens, genre, migrations, etc.), permettant aussi de comprendre quel sujet\/groupe \u201cprend\u201d les places et positions centrales dans la ville et comment ceci devient moteur de changement social dans des contextes de privatisation croissante et de marchandisation.
\nL\u2019objectif de ce s\u00e9minaire est de regarder les espaces publics et l\u2019esprit public \u00e0 partir \u201cdu bas\u201d, des pratiques ordinaires (Bayat, 2010) en \u00e9tant attentif \u00e0 ses pratiques pass\u00e9es et actuelles. L\u2019adoption d\u2019une perspective post-occidentale (Roulleau-Berger, 2016) est-elle en mesure de rendre compte de l\u2019\u00e9mergence ou de la survivance d\u2019espaces publics et d\u2019une sph\u00e8re\/esprit public ainsi que de leur maintien ou transformation dans des contextes autoritaires ? Quelle signification rev\u00eat la perte d\u2019autonomie de la sph\u00e8re publique telle que Habermas a pu la d\u00e9crire ? Comment est-elle mise au d\u00e9fi dans la r\u00e9gion et en quoi les r\u00e9volutions arabes et ses prolongements ont pu modifier le regard, les pratiques et les politiques de l\u2019espace public et indiquer des \u00e9preuves et tensions sur les normes, l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat public et le changement social ?
\nCe s\u00e9minaire vise \u00e0 cr\u00e9er la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019un \u00e9change scientifique \u00e0 partir d\u2019une approche pluridisciplinaire, incluant la g\u00e9ographie, la sociologie, l\u2019anthropologie, l\u2019architecture, les \u00e9tudes urbaines, les sciences politiques et l\u2019histoire\u2026 Il ambitionne de susciter un \u00e9change entre chercheur.e.s du monde arabe et du Moyen-Orient et universitaires europ\u00e9ens et japonais travaillant dans cette m\u00eame r\u00e9gion. Les th\u00e8mes de recherche ne sont pas limitatifs : de l\u2019usage et de la fabrication des espaces publics ou collectifs dans les secteurs ruraux ou les villes, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 des approches sur les migrations, le secteur associatif, les approches de genre. \nThe 21st century faces challenges of building a new public sphere that enables people of different backgrounds and interests to cooperate, coexist, and participate.
\nIn order to enhance the research on the actuality of public spheres and public spaces in the era of globalization, SIAS (Center for Islamic Studies at Sophia University) in Tokyo and the CEDEJ (Centre d\u2019\u00e9tudes et de documentation \u00e9conomiques, juridiques et sociales), in Cairo have the pleasure to announce a call for participation to the international yearly seminar on \u201cPublic space, public sphere, and publicness in the Middle East\u201d.
\nBroadly speaking, public space, sphere, and publicness refer to places that diverse individuals could have access to, for purposes of collaborating, communicating, and interacting with one another. By employing theses three notions, we intend to cover the diverse dimensions related to \u201cpublic\u201d: the focus of public sphere is on the dimension of discourses, while public spaces and common spaces focuses on the material dimension that would be a basis from where a public sphere might develop. These may include intermediary spaces such as coffee shops or discussion places (salons) and supposedly open public spaces, often affected by exclusive vehicular mobility. This covers religious and socio-political events (mawlids, etc.), and their positions in the urban structures. By publicness, we intend to cover diverse public issues debated by different citizens such as food subsidy, gender, migration, etc., to understand who takes the central places and how is this public feature actualized, performed as an engine of social change in contexts of privatization and commodification.
\nThe aim of this seminar is to scrutinize actual public spaces and spheres of the past and present, by looking at ordinary practices (Bayat, 2010). Adopting a post-western perspective in Asian studies (Roulleau-Berger, 2016) what are the reality, actuality and representations of public spaces, spheres, and publicness in the Middle Eastern societies? What are the challenges in the region, and how have the \u201cArab Spring\u201d and its aftermath modified the practices and politics of public spaces in deep transitions with conflicting representations of public good, normative order and social change?
\nThis seminar will provide an opportunity to discuss on these various topics from multi-disciplinary perspectives, including geography, sociology, anthropology, architecture, urban studies, history, political sciences, etc. It aims to create a sphere of exchange between the scholars of Middle Eastern, European, Japanese countries on these issues. Research topics covered will range from the uses and formation of public and common spaces in the urban or rural areas, to spheres of migrants, women, civil associations, etc., in the urban societies, to issues of food security, migration, gender, etc., in the Middle East. Thus, public space, public sphere and publicness are seen as engines for a better understanding of current socio-spatial and multifaceted overall transformations.
\nOrganization
\nThis seminar is organized as an initiative of SIAS (Center for Islamic Studies at Sophia University) in Tokyo and the CEDEJ (Centre d\u2019\u00e9tudes et de documentation \u00e9conomiques, juridiques et sociales) a french research center (CNRS-MEAE) in Cairo, with the support of the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) in Egypt.
\nThe seminar is a part of the research project \u201cPluralistic Development of Public Spheres and Social Ethics in the Middle East\u201d organized by the SIAS, and will take place during two years (2020 and 2021). Further discussions of synthesis will be expected in the final year of the research project in Tokyo.
\nThe seminar is open to researchers, PhD candidates and to advanced Masters students interested in this occasion of meeting scholars from different countries. Proposals have to be submitted before January 10, 2020 to the three e-mail adresses indicated below.
